Open Access

This guide provides an introduction to Open Access - "the free, immediate, online availability of research articles combined with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment."

Article Processing Charge

While it is generally possible to make your research outputs openly available through Institutional Research Repository (IRR) at no cost, you may choose to submit your article to a fully open access journal, or to select the Gold open access option when submitting to a hybrid (subscription) journal. In this case, publishers often require authors to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to make publications open access immediately. The pricing of APCs can vary significantly depending on the journal, its reputation, and the discipline it serves.

If you are considering to publish Gold open access, please check that you have funding in place before submitting your manuscript to the journal.

How Library Can Support OA Publishing

While the Library does NOT provide funding for APCs, we have negotiated a number of open access publishing agreements with publishers. SIT-affiliated corresponding authors can now publish their articles open access with APC waived or discounted in journals that are part of deals referred to as "Read & Publish" or "Transformative" agreements.

You need to use your SIT affiliation in your submitted article and your SIT email address. Publishers will normally notify you of the agreement, if available, at the submission or acceptance stage, and your request will be sent to Library for review and approval.
