Why Publish Open Access

Publishing open access makes your research freely available to a wider audience, increasing its visibility, reach, and potential impact. It removes paywall barriers, allowing other researchers, practitioners, and the public to access and build on your work. Open access can lead to higher citation rates (Piwowar et al., 2018), foster collaboration, and support the broader dissemination of knowledge.

How to Publish Open Access

There are different ways to make an output open access, and the method you choose may vary depending on where you want to publish your research output.

There are two common types of open access publishing are known as Gold and Green Open Access.

Gold/Hybrid Open Access

  • Researchers publish their articles in
    • an Open Access Journal
    • Hybrid Journal (subscription based journal with a paid open access option)
  • Copyright is held by the author
  • No embargo and the access is immediate through the publisher website

Note: If you are considering to publish Gold OA, please check that you have funding in place before submitting your manuscript to the journal.

Green Open Access, also known as Self-Archiving

  • Author does not need to pay to publish, but instead the institution will have to subscribe to the journal or pay to get access to the published article
  • Copyright is retained by the publisher
  • Access could be direct or may be delayed due to embargo periods set by the publisher

Deposit to IRR

  • Self-archive your final accepted manuscript in IRR
  • Meet University and funder requirements with Green open access

SIT Open Access Policy

"Research output along with the metadata, can be deposited for Open Access in SIT's Institutional Research Repository. If the research output is stored with other open repositories, the citation and abstract, with the link to the external open access repository should be provided in SIT IRR."

Paying for Open Access

While it is generally possible to make your research outputs openly available through Institutional Research Repository (IRR) at no cost, you may choose to submit your article to a fully open access journal, or to select the Gold open access option when submitting to a hybrid (subscription) journal. In this case, publishers often require authors to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to make publications open access immediately. The pricing of APCs can vary significantly depending on the journal, its reputation, and the discipline it serves.

If you are considering to publish Gold open access, please check that you have funding in place before submitting your manuscript to the journal.

How Library Can Support OA Publishing

While the Library does NOT provide funding for APCs, we have negotiated a number of open access publishing agreements with publishers. SIT-affiliated corresponding authors can now publish their articles open access with APC waived or discounted in journals that are part of deals referred to as "Read & Publish" or "Transformative" agreements.

You need to use your SIT affiliation in your submitted article and your SIT email address. Publishers will normally notify you of the agreement, if available, at the submission or acceptance stage, and your request will be sent to Library for review and approval.
